The Chapel Down vineyard setting viewed from The Swan
The Swan – Chapel DownBTNDC / Modern British

We ventured to Kent on a snowy night and, for a while, had the bar and the fire to ourselves. It was a fine introduction to The Swan at Chapel Down: beautiful, slightly removed and welcoming without fuss. Chapel Down wines naturally shape the experience, but the setting never becomes a branded backdrop. It feels like a proper destination dining room with enough warmth to make bad weather part of the story. The service was fun, and the evening quickly found its own comfortable rhythm.

Even the bread made a strong first impression. Perfect butter came with poppy-seeded bread and a loaf flavoured with IPA and treacle. A wild mushroom broth with a Kentish blue scone brought the landscape into the meal, while the beef short rib with mustard mayo was exceptional. Rabbit terrine and marjoram dumplings were quietly persuasive, and the duck arrived perfectly cooked. The famous dessert-wine anecdote — “try it and if you don’t like it I’ll buy it for you” — remains exactly the sort of generous confidence a good room should have. Brie was exceptional too.

Rhubarb and marshmallow Swiss roll finished the meal with a little lift. The Swan scores well for a non-London fine-dining room because the experience feels joined up: a beautiful setting, serious but accessible cooking, local wine and a team willing to enjoy the evening with you. It is not trying to compete with London on intensity. Its strength is a calmer sense of occasion, where the journey, the fire and the countryside all become part of the pleasure. At 40, it is an easy Kent recommendation.
