The illuminated Toriton Izakaya frontage in London
Toriton IzakayaBTNDC / Japanese izakaya

Toriton Izakaya announces itself with energy. The illuminated frontage and visible activity give the restaurant a neighbourhood confidence, while inside the room feels practical, welcoming and built for groups. It is not a minimalist shrine to Japanese design; it is a working restaurant with a social pulse, where conversation, drinks and plates arriving at different moments are all part of the experience. That makes Toriton easy to approach, particularly for diners who want to explore without committing to a formal tasting menu.

The menu reflects the owner-chef’s long experience across Chinese and Japanese kitchens. There is a broad selection of familiar izakaya dishes, sushi-style plates and food from the robata grill, with enough range to make a table order generously. The best dishes are the ones that embrace the format’s comfort: something crisp, something savoury, something fresh and a hot plate to keep the middle of the table busy. Precision varies from dish to dish, but the flavours are generally open and appealing, and portions are made for sharing rather than polite sampling.

Service is personable and enthusiastic, especially when the team is asked about the menu or the restaurant’s background. The pace can be uneven and the room is not designed for a quiet, highly choreographed evening, but that is not the promise. Toriton works as an informal night out, with food that arrives in waves and enough choice to keep a group interested. It is a little rougher around the edges than the polished London izakayas, yet that directness gives the place its character and its repeat appeal.
