Friends Restaurant

BTNDC SCORE

41.5/50

The dining room at Friends Restaurant in Pinner
Friends RestaurantBTNDC / Modern European

Friends Restaurant sits in a 500-year-old Tudor building on Pinner High Street, a setting that gives the place a sense of history without making the cooking feel trapped in it. The house may be old, but the culinary heart is very much of today. There is an appealing ease to the room: comfortable enough for a local supper, considered enough for a reason to bring somebody across London. The club's enthusiasm for the place is easy to understand because the restaurant feels rooted rather than staged.

The cooking draws on the very best of British and French cuisine, with a clear respect for classical technique and the pleasures of good produce. Terry Farr founded the restaurant more than 25 years ago after training at the Savoy, and that foundation still matters. Head chef and partner Stelian Scripciariu brings more than a decade of experience from the Dorchester, Gordon Ramsay's Maze and Bernard Loiseau's group, continuing Terry's standards with a more contemporary hand. The result is polished but recognisable, thoughtful without becoming self-important.

Friends is at its strongest when it lets that combination speak plainly. The service carries professional standards but keeps the room warm, and the cooking rewards attention without demanding it. This is not a restaurant relying on the Tudor beams for character; the character comes from continuity, care and the feeling that the people behind it want the table to be happy. At 41.5, the score reflects a restaurant with real substance and a rare ability to make quality feel natural. It is the kind of local address diners are fortunate to have nearby.
