Dishoom Kensington understands the value of a strong opening scene. Its 1930s Bombay café idea is carried through in Art Deco detail, warm lighting and a room that feels lively before the first plate arrives. The references are playful rather than museum-like: the jazz-age atmosphere, the swing in the soundtrack and even the Taj Mahal Foxtrot nod to a particular Bombay romance. It is a setting with plenty to look at, but the central promise remains simple — come in, settle down and stay for a while.

The beloved all-day Bombay café format gives Dishoom its broad appeal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and the hours between them all make sense here, because the room is built around generosity rather than ceremony. It is easy to imagine a quick coffee becoming a longer meal, or a table gathering for an evening that starts with a drink and expands through shared plates. The atmosphere does a great deal of work, but it never feels like a substitute for hospitality. People are welcomed into the story, not kept at a distance from it.

Dishoom’s strengths are less about novelty than about consistency of feeling. The design is distinctive, the food has the comforting breadth expected of a Bombay café and the room remains remarkably good at absorbing different kinds of diners. At 35.5, Kensington is a polished expression of a format that has become familiar without losing its charm. The staging is handsome, but the welcome is what makes the experience endure: generous, relaxed and easy to return to at almost any hour.
