BTNDC SCORE

45/50

A seafood paella from Arros QD, cooked over fire
Arros QDBTNDC / Spanish

Arros QD announces itself through fire. The six-metre woodfire stove is the room’s great piece of theatre, and the open kitchen keeps the spectacle active without turning dinner into a performance you have to watch. Fitzrovia supplies the urban energy, while the restaurant’s warmth and movement make the evening feel closer to a long Spanish lunch than a formal London tasting room. It is a confident setting, but the confidence is useful: the whole room points towards the rice. The architecture makes the kitchen impossible to ignore, and that is precisely the point.

Quique Dacosta’s approach to paella is rooted in the Mediterranean and sharpened by excellent produce. Rice is treated as a serious ingredient, not merely a vehicle, absorbing smoke, stock and the character of whatever sits around it. Seafood, vegetables and local ingredients are handled with care, and the best dishes have the satisfying contrast of a properly developed base with bright, clean toppings. The cooking is bold but not blunt; fire gives depth, while acidity and freshness keep the meal moving.

The theatre works because the food earns it. Watching the kitchen tend the stove adds anticipation, then the dish arrives with the generosity expected of something designed for sharing. Service is assured and the room’s energy makes it easy to order broadly, although the scale and central location make this a meaningful spend. Arros QD is not trying to be subtle. It offers smoke, rice, excellent ingredients and a vivid sense of occasion — a well-judged expression of Mediterranean cooking in a very lively London frame.
