The Fordwich Arms has the kind of setting that makes a meal feel rooted before the first glass is poured. Fordwich is England’s smallest town, and the pub sits beside the River Stour with an old-world presence that no designer could convincingly manufacture. Inside, the bar and oak-panelled dining room retain the warmth of a proper pub, helped by open fires and the comfortable movement between drinkers and diners. The Michelin star is visible in the care, but not in any anxiety about proving it.
Dan Smith’s cooking is accomplished without losing its appetite. Kentish ingredients take the lead, with the menus shifting according to what local farms and producers can provide. Sauces are concentrated and balanced, vegetables have enough attention to hold their own and fish or meat is treated with the kind of control that makes simplicity feel luxurious. The tasting menu offers more room for detail, while the à la carte retains the welcome directness of a pub meal. What connects both is a clear sense that technique should deepen flavour, not obscure it.
Service is relaxed, capable and wonderfully unforced. The team knows how to explain a dish, pour a wine and leave a table alone in equal measure. The riverside terrace adds a different rhythm in summer, but the old interior is where the restaurant’s character is most complete. Prices are serious, as they need to be, though the quality and setting make the meal feel like a destination rather than an inflated local lunch. The Fordwich Arms is the real thing: a pub first in spirit, a very good restaurant in execution and a place that makes Kent feel deliciously close at hand.
