Sael is built around the pleasure of being out. The room is handsome but relaxed, with leather banquettes, plenty of light and a soundtrack that gives the polished setting a little edge. It manages the difficult trick of feeling special at lunch and properly alive in the evening. There is enough space for a business meal to feel composed, but enough movement at the bar to make a table for two feel sociable rather than exposed. Sael wants you to settle in, and the design makes a persuasive case for doing exactly that.
The menu is broad in the best brasserie tradition, moving between polished snacks, generous mains and dishes that give British produce a contemporary frame. The kitchen is strongest when it keeps the flavours direct: a well-judged sauce, a crisp edge, a piece of meat cooked with care. Not every flourish is necessary, but the underlying cooking is assured and the portions have the confidence of a restaurant that expects people to arrive hungry. There is particular pleasure in ordering for the table and letting the meal become slightly longer than planned.
Service keeps the experience moving without rushing it. The team is friendly, quick to respond and comfortable with a room that asks them to manage several different kinds of occasion at once. Sael is not chasing the intensity of a tasting-menu restaurant, nor should it; its appeal is breadth, ease and atmosphere. For a central London brasserie, it offers a welcome sense of personality and a menu that makes returning easy. Bring someone who likes a proper room, a generous plate and the possibility of one more drink.
