The Number Eight restaurant entrance in Sevenoaks
Number EightBTNDC / Restaurant and bar

Number Eight has the scale and attitude of a place designed for regulars. The entrance is smart but unassuming, and inside the room moves easily between bar, dining table and the kind of informal seat that suits a quick glass of wine. There are very few restrictions on how to use the restaurant, which is a helpful philosophy in a town where an evening may begin with a drink and only later decide to become dinner. The atmosphere is confident, friendly and more interested in welcome than in ceremony.

The small-plate menu changes with the seasons and with availability, giving the kitchen a useful reason to stay flexible. There are no formal starters or mains, so a table can build a meal slowly: something bright, something comforting, a vegetable dish, then a larger plate if appetite demands it. The best cooking is straightforward and well seasoned, with freshness doing as much work as technique. Not every dish is equally memorable, and the open-ended format can make portions difficult to judge, but the food encourages exactly the sort of shared, conversational eating the room promises.

Service is relaxed and personable, with the team happy to help a table decide how much to order and when to stop. Dishes arriving when ready is part of the rhythm, though it can feel less graceful if several plates land together. Prices are fair for the quality and the flexibility, particularly when a group shares broadly. Number Eight is not trying to be the most ambitious restaurant in Kent. It is offering something more repeatable: a good bar, a changing menu and enough hospitality to make a spontaneous dinner feel like a plan worth keeping.
