The light-filled dining room at Lurra in Marylebone
LurraBTNDC / Basque charcoal grill

Lurra is a restaurant with a clear idea of pleasure. The Marylebone room is light, calm and carefully unshowy, with a long table and generous windows making the space feel more like a refined cider house than a metropolitan showcase. That is exactly the right mood. Conversation comes easily, the team gives the grill its proper focus and the atmosphere feels quietly confident rather than engineered. It is a room that rewards arriving hungry and resisting the urge to make too many plans for the rest of the evening.

Charcoal is the organising principle, but the real story is respect for the ingredient. Lurra’s old-cow beef has the deep, distinctive flavour that comes from time, grass and patient farming, and the kitchen does not blunt it with unnecessary complication. A rib-eye for the table arrives with a seasoned crust and the kind of mineral richness that makes a small amount feel substantial. Whole grilled turbot, octopus with piquillo and a sharp tomato salad show the same confidence: heat, salt, acidity and texture, each doing a particular job. Even the burnt Basque cheesecake keeps its sweetness in check.

The service is assured and generously informative. Staff can explain the provenance of the meat without turning dinner into a lecture, and they understand that a grill restaurant is as much about pacing as temperature. The wine list leans naturally towards the Iberian peninsula, with enough breadth to make the pairing part of the fun. Lurra is not inexpensive, particularly when the best cuts are ordered for sharing, but the sourcing and execution justify the spend. This is Basque cooking with a London address and a genuine sense of place — direct, serious and deeply satisfying.
