Sharing plates and wine served at Firepit @ Cave
Firepit @ CaveBTNDC / Sharing plates

Firepit @ Cave understands the appeal of a table covered in small plates. The room is low-lit and enveloping, with dark finishes, leather seating and the sort of visual hush that makes a glass of wine feel like the right place to begin. There is a faint sense of theatre around the fire, but it never overwhelms the meal. Groups settle in quickly, ordering by instinct and passing dishes across the table. The atmosphere is grown-up without being solemn, and the restaurant has found a useful balance between date-night polish and the generous looseness of sharing food.

The menu travels widely, taking in the smoky vocabulary of the American West alongside the gentler spice and acidity of the Far East. That could easily become a list of disconnected ideas; the fire gives it a thread. Charred edges, roasted sweetness and a little bitterness make the plates feel related, whether the main ingredient is meat, vegetable or something creamy and cool. The best dishes are those that allow the produce to stay recognisable, using spice as architecture rather than camouflage. Portions are generous enough to encourage a second order, which is precisely how the kitchen wants the menu to be experienced.

Service is relaxed, friendly and comfortable with a table that is making decisions as it goes. The team gives useful guidance on how much to order and keeps the plates moving at a pace that feels natural, although a full room can create the occasional gap between courses. Value is strongest when three or four people share broadly and let the menu wander. Firepit @ Cave is not pretending to be a formal destination restaurant, and its pleasures are more immediate than cerebral. That is part of its success: a handsome setting, a clear fire-led identity and enough flavour to make the evening linger.
