The welcoming entrance to Fallow in St James’s Market
FallowBTNDC / Modern British

Fallow is immediately sociable. The room has the volume and movement of a place people genuinely want to be, with tables close enough to borrow energy from one another and a bar that keeps the evening moving. It is polished, but not hushed; the design feels confident rather than precious. For a restaurant in the middle of St James’s, there is a welcome lack of ceremony. You can come in hungry, order generously and feel that the room is on your side from the start.

The kitchen is at its best when it turns a clear idea into a plate with real appetite appeal. Vegetables are treated as the main event, cuts are used intelligently and the cooking carries a welcome sense of generosity. There are clever combinations, but the cleverness is never allowed to erase texture or savour. The menu rewards curiosity, particularly when the table shares a few things, and there is enough range to make repeat visits feel genuinely worthwhile. Even the bolder moments are tethered to something familiar and delicious.

Service matches the room: brisk, warm and engaged without becoming overbearing. The team knows the menu well and gives useful guidance when the choice is difficult, which it often is. A few moments could be tidier at peak pace, but the energy is part of the appeal and the kitchen keeps the quality remarkably high across a busy service. Fallow is not trying to be a temple. It is trying to make excellent food feel exciting, generous and easy to return to — a brief it fulfils with uncommon confidence.
