El Pastor – Soho

BTNDC SCORE

31.5/50

Colourful tacos with pineapple, coriander and onion at El Pastor Soho
El Pastor – SohoBTNDC / Mexican tacos

El Pastor Soho is built for movement. The room feels compact, colourful and immediately sociable, with the bar and the tables sharing the same steady hum. It is not a place that asks for a long period of adjustment: the menu is easy to approach, the drinks list gives the evening momentum and the smell of toasted corn does most of the welcoming. Soho can make hospitality feel transactional, but El Pastor has enough warmth and noise to feel like a proper gathering point rather than a pit stop.

The house-made tortillas are the foundation, with heritage Mexican corn giving them a flavour and texture that supermarket softness cannot imitate. Al pastor brings the familiar combination of spice, char and pineapple, while the wider menu moves through tostadas, quesadillas and tacos with enough variety for a table to order broadly. The salsas provide heat and freshness, and the balance is generally much more persuasive than the occasional overloaded bite. These are tacos made to be eaten with the hands, quickly and with pleasure. The mezcal and tequila list is a natural companion rather than an afterthought.

Service keeps pace with the room: brisk, friendly and confident when the tables fill. There is not much ceremony, which is exactly right, although the busiest stretches can make ordering and finding a comfortable rhythm slightly less effortless. Value is strongest when you share several plates and let the meal develop in rounds. El Pastor is not trying to disguise street food as fine dining. It respects the craft of the tortilla, takes sourcing seriously and delivers the kind of bright, noisy Soho evening that leaves you planning the next visit before the last taco is gone.
