The open wood-fire kitchen at Ekstedt at the Yard
Ekstedt at the YardBTNDC / Nordic wood-fire

Ekstedt at the Yard has the rare room that makes you look towards the kitchen before you have read the menu. Set inside Great Scotland Yard, it is dark, tactile and deliberately close to the action, with the wood fire giving the evening a warm, almost elemental pulse. The atmosphere is theatrical without being loud. Staff move around the hearth with practiced purpose, and the sense of watching a meal being made is immersive rather than distracting. This is fine dining that understands the romance of a little smoke in the air.

Niklas Ekstedt’s method is technically exacting, even when the plates look simple. Wood, embers and ash are used to build flavour, not merely to brand the experience, and seasonal British produce benefits from the discipline. Vegetables can arrive with sweetness deepened by flame and a clean, almost mineral finish; fish takes on perfume without losing its delicate centre. The menu moves between Nordic restraint and flashes of brightness, with pickles, cultured elements and carefully judged acidity preventing the fire from becoming monotonous. Each course feels composed, but the pleasure remains immediate.

Service is polished, knowledgeable and genuinely good at bringing the guest into the cooking. Explanations are concise, timing is steady and the team knows when to let the room’s atmosphere do the work. The price places Ekstedt firmly in destination territory, and the experience demands a little attention, but it rewards that attention with unusual consistency. There is no need for spectacle once the fire is doing its job. Ekstedt at the Yard is a confident London interpretation of Nordic cooking: precise, atmospheric and just smoky enough to stay in the memory.
